AOLP, which stands for the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals, is an organization of lighting professionals who work together to better the industry. The Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) makes it it’s mission to ensure quality outdoor lighting installation and standards. Not all lighting companies are the same, and not all are members of AOLP. Those companies that are members of this organization have taken the initiative to set themselves apart by increasing their education of the outdoor lighting industry and proper installation techniques. When looking to hire an outdoor lighting professional look for those who are members of AOLP – a list of members can be found at www.aolponline.org . Throughout the United States, there are no clearly defined national standards for low voltage outdoor lighting. In most states, the test given to license low voltage contractors has little or nothing to do with the actual work that they perform. AOLP feels this lack of standards has a profound impact on the safety and quality of services that we provide. AOLP has created a standardized certification test to address the lack of standards that presently exist. CLVLT: The Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technician (CLVLT) exam is administered by AOLP. The CLVLT exam measures the knowledge and capabilities of the applicants and is specifically for 12-volt systems. The test consists of a written exam and seven half-hour labs. Upon receiving a passing grade, applicants are listed as Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technicians (CLVLT). COLD: Primary goal is to promote design excellence and to allow for the development of an individual’s own lighting design style. It is our intent that each individual learns and re-learns the concepts presented, so that progressive change is made in the thought process of an individual design. Also, we will be looking for each participant to get more involved over the four-year period by offering input to the group. The following bullet points highlight this programs purpose: To incorporate and ensure “good and responsible” lighting design practices To offer advanced levels of landscape lighting design training and instill professionalism to our designers To gain industry recognition and market exposure for our members and AOLP To understand and communicate the “emotional” impact of a landscape lighting design To address growing regulatory concerns and trade related issues Light It Right is CLVLT Number 1275 and COLD Number 1727 (1 of 2 in Texas). Simple LED lighting systems are easier to install than the halogen systems were. Will Outdoor Lighting benefit my Landscape Design?

Yes, lighting will elevate your landscape design to the next level. Landscape design is all about using plants to create art. For the grandest appearance, up lighting is the way to go! Light coming up from the bottom creates a dramatic, almost haunting, effect. When you think of France you think Chateaus and those dramatic roof lines. When landscape designers are designing in the French style, roof lines and porticos are tied almost seamlessly into the landscape – almost like there is no end or beginning for either. When looking at the gardens at Versailles, the Louvre, and the Tuileries Garden statues are abundant, grand fountains pull you in, and numerous gravel labyrinths will turn you around. Of course for residential design the scale is much smaller, however by no means less grand. Statues create a unique lighting opportunity – depending on where the statue is locate it can be down lit, up lit, or even lit from within. Fountains – now these are fun for lighting designers! There is so much that can be done with lighting to make a fountain pop and look just as grand as ones in Paris they are modeled after (or brought in from). Lighting can be placed at the pedestal and illuminate the basin from the bottom, or if it is a circular fountain, lights can be placed evenly spaced around the entire fountain to highlight any intricate detail that may be along the side. The greatest WOW for fountains is lighting installed in the water itself – at night a lovely glow comes from with in and creates the dream like feel that walking through French towns creates. Labyrinths – no one does these better than the French, so why not immolate them. Walking through the Gardens of Versailles is like entering a different dream at every turn, and it literally is, each area is dedicated and designed differently. Labyrinths are unique and rare to start, and even more so here in the US, so why not use a unique and different fixture along these magical, wondering gravel walkways? Bollards provide that unique look and feel these areas require – they are path lights, however not typical path lights. When designers are working to create a lovely English garden, the entrance is the focal point – it is all about welcoming your guests to your home. Lighting is a key part of this, how can one welcome their guests when their guests cannot see where they are going? Lighting the along the drive up the from will usher your guests exactly where they need to go. Using soft wash lighting and accent lighting along the free flowing landscape will keep in the English theme of less structure. Will my lights be blue?

Not all LEDs are created the same, but they have come a long way from their initial state. Only if you want them to be! LEDs have come a long way from where they first started decades ago. There are various color temperatures to pick from, warm white all the way to blue. So, if you want the blue light, sure it can be blue, if you don’t than no it will not. You can even have Color Changing LEDs!

Will my electric bill go up?

Nope, not with LEDs. Now that LEDs are reliable they are the only bulbs Light It Right uses. With the use of LEDs the uptick on the electric bill is minimal, maybe a few cents, you won’t even notice; whereas when halogens where used you could actually see the increase on the bill.

Will my yard suffer any damage?

You will barely know we were even there! Short answer, No. It may appear that when we are trenching your yard that there is no way that grass is going back in the same spot. Well the way we do it at Light It Right you bet that grass goes right back into its spot. You may see some trench lines but those will go away once the grass settles back in.

Lighting does need some TLC after it goes it, and landscape care is one thing that needs to be done. Yes. If you have immature landscape when your system is installed you will need to have your lights adjusted and relocated once the landscape matures. This is a simple process and it will ensure that your lighting is looking its best and the original purpose of the lighting is still achieved.
